A leading Chicago Neuro-psychiatrist was consulted to offer insight into the best way of teaching new skills. For over 25 years, his function is to change behavior in his patients. He asserts two key elements in changing of human behavior, which have been extrapolated to change in skills for golf.

The two elements are:
  • Repetition - the idea of repeating the desired behavior is essential in creating 'muscle memory' or intellectual capital for storage in our brains for use at the required time. Simply put, this is 'practice.'
  • The 2nd element, and the more insightful one, is the idea of TRIGGER STIMULANTS - - this is attaching the repetition discussed above (practice) with an experiential stimulant so that the 'mechanics' of the new behavior (or skill) are eliminated, but a more natural instinctive skill is ingrained permanently.
In the shortgame bullseye, the TRAFFIC LIGHT (Red, Yellow, Green) coloring in both the target and the rings offer that trigger stimulant. Here is how it works.

Red typically sits at the top of a traffic light and universally means "STOP" or "Danger."

Yellow typically sits in the middle of a traffic light and universally means "Caution."

Green typically sits at the bottom of a traffic light and universally means "GO" or "Safe."

So the connection of the Traffic Light to the Shortgame Bullseye is two fold:
  1. The lower shot, the lower trajectory shot, typically known as the bump-and-run, is the Green shot. The medium trajectory shot is the Yellow shot, typically known as the pitch shot. And the high trajectory shot is the Red shot, typically known as the lob or flop shot. By associating a color that one sees everyday to a required short game shot, one introduces a less threatening prospect for muscle memory during a round of golf. So ideally, all one has to do is think about the color of shot they want to hit and imagine the trajectory to a traffic light.

  2. In addition to this, the other key association to be made between the traffic light and the shortgame Bullseye is the fact that each color means something (beyond a trajectory). Red means STOP in the real world and in the golf world, it means the hardest shot to execute. Green in the real world means GO, and conversely, in the golf world, is typically the high percentage shot. And yellow means caution translating in golf to a shot that is easier than the lob shot but certainly not as easy as the green (bump-and-run) shot. Therefore, given a choice, the golfer should always execute the GREEN shot first and only use the other shots if circumstances dictate so (such as a bunker between the ball and the hole). This makes SELECTION of the shot a very manageable thinking process now and this is what the shortgame is all about.
It could be expected that practicing the visualization of the color and matching shot together should stimulate the motions required for the shot required - creating a unique muscle memory way of conditioning. For example, if the shot required were a high trajectory shot (say over a bunker to a tight pin), it can be expected that the user would need to only think of the color 'red' and simply follow through on the motion required for that shot. This would prevent the user from thinking about the bunker, the difficulty of the shot or any other distraction. And since the traffic light coloring is something we all see everyday, the trigger stimulant is reinforced everyday.

I wanted to thank you for your time during the 2007 PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando. My wife (also a PGA member) and two assistants attended the show for all three days, plus the demo day. On Saturday night we had our wrap up dinner and as is our custom, we asked the question: "What was the single best thing we saw at the show?"

You will be proud to know that your product "The Short Game Bullseye" was the product of choice!

We began this year’s show by challenging each other to find anything which would enhance our members experience at the Club. I cannot think of a better way to enhance the experience anymore than allowing them an opportunity to understand how the scoring shoots need to be played. Your device is so simplistic it is brilliant.

I just placed my order and my wife is doing the same. Unfortunately our practice areas are not so large as the modern facilities (the club was founded in 1893), yet I will guarantee that one target will be near the shortgame area and the other will be near the putting green every day! Hopefully we will have members ask to buy one, but if not we will need more after we wear them out.

Thanks again.

Sincerely,

The Shortgame Bullseye has been fantastic. My own golf coach has "borrowed" mine to use with some of his other students. It is remarkable how the colors and the design allow students to focus on getting the ball out there, there being the target, rather than fixated on the ball itself. Getting students focused on a target facilitates the teaching process 10 fold. The response from students has been consistent- "WOW … What a fantastic tool", "The circles make it so easy to concentrate on a target", "I am learning trajectories and their importance" and …. "Simplicity for productive teaching”- is my own!

As an amateur who plays in regular tournaments, I spend about fifty percent of my time on the short game. I used to just practice hitting shots around the green but with the Shortgame Bullseye, my practice is very focused – to hit a specific trajectory, so I can control the ball release, and to hit it at a specific landing spot. This is an awesome tool.

I was one of the first people to use the Shortgame Bullseye. I now have the best short game at my club. Using colors to match heights has literally changed the way I think on the course.

Dropped handicap from 12 to 8

I have shaved 8 strokes off my handicap without altering my swing – I never realized how many shots I could save by getting up and down with confidence. All I think about now is the color of the shot I need to hit and I don’t think about anything else anymore.

Dropped handicap from 19 to 11

There is only one practice bunker on my range; using the Shortgame Bullseye like this allowed me to practice hitting shots with different lip sizes – I have learned to control the trajectory of the shot out of bunkers now.

Dropped handicap from 11 to 6
